Wood Elves

Its time to start gearing up for the second big display game of Midgard at Colours 2025 6th Sept. The last game was great but I had noticed I was a few bases short in the Elven army. Having a second crack of the WIP should allow me to fix this.

I idea is to paint up around six more including the Elven king. Below can be seen his royal standard to help make him stand out on the field. I tried a few designs, none of which were any good. In the end I just copied his shield design onto the standard. It looks better than the rubbish I was coming up with.

I've found a great new technique for these Elves, it's a camo wash from GW. I bought it for the current Dessert project but decided to try it in these Elves too. The results were good with the wash tying all the greens and browns together. The bronze armour also looked good.

I'm quite enjoying painting these guys again after spending so long kit bashing them over a year ago. I like the gray Elf amongst all of the woodland shades. He will really pop in the ranks. I am thinking about making a company of gray Elves just for variety.

His blue tunic gives him the look of a Noldor Elf, so popular in Middle Earth gaming.

EBay Rocks!

I saw some nice looking model rock formations on eBay and took a punt on them. Unfortunately they weren't quite what was pictured. I thought I was getting what was in the photograph...
The rocks had very flat tops for wargaming but had lost their realistic look.

Here is the picture from eBay, I thought they would look great for ancient Ireland with their moss covered cracked look.

It was time to break out the tufts and flocks to hide the flat tops.

Grit was added first and this was very effective.
I then added various tufts and static grass to weather the rocks in.

Now they will work for Middle Earth and any game set in rugged country.
The flat tops are still their for figures but are not so pronounced.

Update: lastly I added some more grit just to add some highlights to the rock.

These lighter stones were from a mix by Luke's APS.

They look better now you can see some stones again, looks more rocky.

Desert Map

I took the leep the other day to order a desert play mat. After a bit of looking on eBay, I went for the Baron steppe version. I liked the greenery of the bushes and I thought it looked more like the Sudan.
As well as the Sudan, the mat will also be useful for the future desert war project too. I thought the price was good too at £43. It will definitely make my desert games look better.

The green areas of shrub add a lot of interest.
I also think this would be a good mat for playing the Indian wars on, as there is quite a bit of dry grass.

The only real problem was a white blob on the sheet. I'll have to paint over this as it's obviously a mistake.

Desert Armour

The 3rd infantry are now mobile.
Colonial Marines are here too with their classic APC.

Two very different styles of APCs.

The Marine vehicle is quite a bit larger than the army one.
3rd infantry disembark from their new mount.

The marines from Wargames Atlantic are very nice and are growing on me.

Quite how the infantry get into the vehicle is a process known only to them.
A ladder would be nice...
