I just had this idea while writing the last post, but had to wait a bit for the base to be dry. Mixing wood glue and grit should make for some nice coastal detail on the base.
To tie everything together, I added the barnacle mix to the other seaside scenery too.
I covered a pirate bottle with a coral mass to make it a bit more in keeping with an ancient shoreline.
I had some fun with green stuff again, blocking in corals and lumps of seaweed. No starfish this time, maybe on the next base.
I plan to dry brush this base is light Grey's to make the detail 'pop', then use various Contrast paints to add the colour. These Contrast paints should be good, as you can add patches of red and orange into the rocks for a real seaside look.
I imagine these rocks will be mostly browns with a few exotic colours popped in.
Making all these rock pools really makes me want to go to the seaside again. Arrrr the smell of it!

Scotia Grendel Rockpools
I ordered some scenery from Scotia Grendel last week for my Celtic project. Lovely standing stones and also a group of Rockpools caught my eye too. Great for those slimy, shore bandits, the Fomorians I thought.
They are very nice with lots of seaside details.
I used the idea of the stalagmites to help create the look of the Fomorian bases. The jagged rocks are something I hadn't thought about before, but they look in keeping with a rugged coastline. They also echo the monsters spiky appearance, helping him blend in. It hasn't got this big by being seen...
I have left a flat area of base that will become a rockpool. Green stuff will be used to cover the rocks in weed and barnacles etc when the glue dries.

Thinking about it, some grit mixed with wood glue would make for great barnacles when applied to the stones. The grit could be dry brushed, creating a nice effect.
I will leave these scenery pieces unbased, so they can be placed seamlessly onto the terrain.

North Sea Nasty
I had an idea to try a different kind of pattern on the ancient armour, this time using straight lines. A sort of primitive knotwork. The results are okay but there's room to improve on this for sure.
A giant, wet sea monster crawls out of the North sea to help the Fomorian raiders.
I had fun painting this, as I had no plan and it just kind of evolved. It's nice to paint something completely different for a change.
I wanted this thing to be an ambush predator so camouflage was important. It had to blend in to the corals and seaweed of the seafloor.
I suppose I could call this 'thing' a Deep One. I know for a fact that this individual is responsible for dragging down two boats last winter in the low tides. Let's hope some enchanted bronze of the Tautha De Danann can stop his murderous thirst. It's not wise to walk alone on the cold shores of the Atlantic, not all the seaweed covered boulders are rocks, some are very much alive...and hungry.
This beastie will be given by of a coat of floor varnish to give it a wet sheen when finished. It might be fun to play this giant terror with random element to its actions. A bit like the elephants in ancient battles when they go rouge.

Adding predatory fish stripes seemed to give it a nasty edge and these would help it blend into the kelp forests of the North sea.

Even Mori Fomori
Recently I managed to pick up this Fomorian leader off eBay. It gave me another little nudge towards finishing some warbands of the slippery monsters.
I used a piece of plastic High Elf armour to finish this guys Greenstuff helmet. It also pulls it closer to the metal sculpts from Bob Olly.
This is a converted Cave troll from Reaper.
While at Warfare 2022, I picked up some more Fomorian looking Cave trolls from Reaper. These have the big ears I was looking for that match the Alternative Army Fomorians. At £4.50 for a huge figure, it's not to be sniffed at.
To make them look a little more Fomorian, I'm going to add bronze armour.
This massive fish monster from Reaper also received some green stuff love. Mainly, his joints being filled and textured. I also added large clumps of seaweed to add a bit of coastal feel.
Reaper Bones figures really come into their own when trying to create an army on the cheap.
I think there's been an accident!
I used a coating of Thondia Brown base paint to give the smooth plastic a skin like texture. Should pay off in the dry brushing stage.

I really enjoy trying to make detailed Celtic armour now, it's the best thing about playing this era for me. Lots of tiny swirls and circles should look good once dry brushed.
