I thought I would use the horse colour chart to put some context into the battalions. Looks like most of Custer’s command were mounted on Bays. Company E were very noteworthy on their Grey horses and were recalled by many of the enemy. Buglers were mounted on Greys, as Custer was heavily influenced by Napoleon.
In Men who would be Kings, US Cavalry are made up of 8 veteran irregular cavalrymen. So I think it’s best to say that number make up a company of forty men. Four bases of two riders. When they dismount there will be three skirmish stands and a base of horse holders.
This will be very useful with the painting.
