While I was painting the flesh on this Orc, I also dry brushed large areas of him in the same colour. I wasn't worried about the colour at this point because all that will be changed with the Contrast paints. The main thing is getting the shadows with the dry brushing.
Here he is with various brown and black Contrast paints washed over the dry brushed areas. Mixing the Black Templar paint with others is a good way of creating darker tones.
This isn't really a Contrast tip, more of a trick to highlighting armour. A HB pencil rubbed over chain mail and the edges of armour makes them stand out better. This is useful after they have been dulled down by multiple ink washes etc.
Here is the same Orc dipped in Army Painter Dark tone. The 'Dip' will shade everything and tie it all together. Using Contrast paints and then brushing on Dark tone dip allows me to crack through large numbers of these figures.
This guy has just been washed with Dark tone, once a matt varnish is applied, he should be ready to go. I will lightly brush floor varnish over his metal weapons and armour to give them a sheen. This is the very last step before basing him.
