Donnybrook At Sea

Had a great game of Donnybrook at Sea yesterday, replaying the Dutch attack up the Medway in 1667. It was a great looking game with loads of 28mm tall ships, fully crewed with figures. A task not normally attempted.

English cannon open up on the Dutch ships.

The Dutch were trying to capture the English flagship, the King Charles. The King Charles managed to set sail but was sailing against the wind. This stopped her making it to clear water and she was soon entangled with the Dutch. Luckily for the King Charles, the ship she collided with had been mostly cleared by cannon fire; So after a short fight, it was the Dutch who were boarded.
In our retelling of the raid, the English managed to keep hold of the King Charles and repulse the initial Dutch assualt on the beaches. The game was stopped as it was getting late but it was a very close run thing. The English had kept hold of their Flag ship and caused merry hell amongst the Dutch rigging. However, there were still companies of Dutch marines on the beaches and another fully crewed tall ship to deal with. So I think the English won on points but if the game had gone on much longer, I think the game would have played out much like the historical event. The Charles being lost.

Dutch marines land and assault the English defences.

Dutch swarm the beaches.

The English batteries open up at the approaching Dutch.

It was a great looking game and a lovely change to play a naval conflict too. A big thanks to Simon George for putting it all together.

Rousing report. Love the blending of game, reenactment photos with paintings of the periods naval actions. Very ambitious game.

Ambitious! Yes that’s the word I should of used in my write up. It certainly was that. I was amazed at the weight of those big resin ships… very heavy indeed. It took two hands to move them.
